Updates

LED Event Manager checks for new versions by itself and asks you before it changes anything. New versions are never installed without your consent, and you do not need an account to get them.

When the app checks

The app looks for a new version:

  • when it starts, already on the sign-in screen, before you sign in;
  • automatically every few hours while it is running;
  • whenever you click Check for updates in Settings → Updates.

It only checks while the computer is online. Offline, nothing happens: no check, no error message. The checks resume as soon as the computer is back online.

The update prompt

When a new version is available, the app shows Version <x> is available with three choices:

ButtonWhat it does
DownloadDownloads the new version (on macOS: opens the installer in your browser, see below)
LaterHides the prompt until the next automatic check, a few hours later
Skip this versionAutomatic checks no longer offer this version; you are asked again when a newer one comes out. Check for updates in Settings still shows it, so you can install it after all

Nothing is downloaded until you choose Download. When the download is finished, the app shows Version <x> is ready to install:

  • Restart to update closes the app, installs the new version and starts it again. If a project has changes that are not saved yet, the app first asks Save changes? — choose Save or Don't save to go on, or Cancel to keep working: nothing is installed then. After Don't save, the changes stay available through Recover on the Projects page (see Projects).
  • Later keeps working with the current version. Quitting the app does not install the update — it is installed only when you choose Restart to update.

Never during a show

While an output window is shown on a display or an NDI stream is being sent, the app does not show the prompt. It waits and appears once the show stops, so a running show is never interrupted.

Stable and Beta

Settings → Updates → Update channel picks which versions this computer gets:

  • Stable (default) — the released versions.
  • Beta — gets new versions earlier, but they are less tested. Use it for testing, not for a live show.

Switching to Beta checks the beta channel right away. The channel is set per computer. Switching from Beta back to Stable never installs an older version: you stay on the beta you have until a Stable version newer than it is released, and then get that one.

Installing an update

Windows

After Restart to update the app installs the update and starts again.

If Windows protected your PC (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen) appears, click More info and then Run anyway. It shows because the app is not yet signed with a Windows code-signing certificate.

macOS

On macOS the app cannot install updates itself yet. Download opens the new .dmg installer in your browser instead; install it over the current version:

  1. Wait for the download to finish and double-click the .dmg.
  2. Quit LED Event Manager.
  3. Drag LED Event Manager into the Applications folder and choose Replace.
  4. Start the app from Applications.

Your projects and settings are kept. Because the app is not notarised by Apple yet, the first start of the new version may be blocked with a message that Apple could not verify the app. Click Done (not Move to Trash), then open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. On macOS 14 and older it is enough to right-click the app → Open → Open. See also Install on macOS.

Settings → Updates

  • Current version — the version installed on this computer (also shown at the bottom of the sidebar and in Settings → About).
  • Update channel — Stable or Beta, see above.
  • Last check — when the app last checked and the result: You have the latest version, Version <x> is available, offline, or that the update server could not be reached (the app tries again later).
  • Check for updates — checks right away.

If the section says This build does not check for updates., you are running a build without the updater (for example a development build).

Follows the current LED Event Manager development version.
